The Tormek SVD-186 R Gouge Jig is carefully designed for you to have a high level of control in the sharpening process and achieve super sharp edges on your tools. The high level of control enables you to exactly replicate your chosen profile. Once the tool is shaped to the right shape, you remove only a minimal amount of steel when sharpening – you just touch up the edge.
Sharpen your woodturning gouges
With the SVD-186 R Gouge Jig, you will get an exact replication of both the shape and edge angle on your bowl gouges and spindle gouges, so you can be sure that the tool will behave in the same predictable way on the lathe after every sharpening. Used correctly and together with your Tormek tool sharpener, there is no alternative method that can give you faster or sharper results.
The jig can be set for various lengths of the side bevel. Create your own profile “recipe” or choose one of the recommended ones from the profile selection chart in the instructions.
You can also sharpen your turning cutters with SVD-186 R. Mount your cutter onto the special shaft that is included with the jig, and you get a controlled sharpening.
Sharpen your bent or curved woodcarving gouges
The Tormek slow running water cooled grindstone is ideal for sharpening your carving tools. The SVD-186 R makes it easy to sharpen even curved or bent carving tools. The grindstone is gentle to the carbon steel and eliminates the risk of overheating the delicate edge.
The jig can be set to fit the shape of the tool, so you can create an even bevel on the entire part of the convex shaped edge. You can also sharpen down bent gouges with the same superior results.
For woodcarving tools there are no set profiles, the easiest way to set the edge angle is to simply color the bevel so you can see to see where the sharpening will take place.
Sharpen your V-tools, violin making knives & chip carving knives
Thanks to the redesigned version of the Tormek Gouge Jig, it’s now possible to sharpen special woodcarving tools like violin making knives and V-tools. A new locking screw allows you to fix the Gouge Jig’s rotary movement at the required location. With this new feature, it will be easier to maintain full control when sharpening carving tools, such as V-tools. The locking screw also facilitates grinding to a completely flat bevel on violin making knives and chip carving knives when using the MB-100 Multi Base and Tormek Diamond Wheels.
Nick Agar, Professional Woodturner
“The SVD-186 R Gouge Jig is a must have for repeating those difficult grinds such as the fingernail or swept back grind. It allows repeatable accurate reproduction of your chosen grinds. I love how it clicks into place at each chosen number. It also transforms into another jig and is able to sharpen scraper tips such as tear drop straight or round shapes.”
